10. Are employees of the Federal Reserve Bank considered federal employees?

Read below for all of the answers!

I had the opportunity to visit the LA Branch of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank in June. It was really cool to see billions of dollars and billions of coins but they wouldn't let me take any pictures so you'll just have to use your imagination.
First it's important to understand what the Federal Reserve Bank does. Basically the  Federal Reserve Bank is the central bank of the U.S and it controls access to the U.S dollar, so that means that they determine how much money should be in circulation at any one time. The LA branch is the 2nd largest cash operation in the U.S, second to NY. There are 12 Federal Reserve branches, one for each of the twelve Federal Reserve Districts. The Federal Reserve Banks also is the bank for all banks. They hold at least %10 of cash from all banks so this means billions of dollars. When banks need cash, they contact the Federal Bank to make a withdraw.

Now that you understand what the Federal Reserve Bank does, let's talk about the impotent stuff....jobs and internships! The Federal Reserve Bank is independent from the U.S government; employees of the Federal Reserve are not employees of the federal government. This means that you will not have to go through USAjobs to find and apply for positions to the Federal Reserve. You can simply find opportunities at all twelve branches at: http://www.federalreserve.gov/careers/. For opportunities at the west-coast branches visit: http://www.frbsf.org/our-district/careers/.

The Federal a Reserve Bank recruits students from all majors, not just accounting. For both their internship and full-time positions they look for candidates who possess strong analytic and problem solving skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, leadership experience, presentation skills, and acumen for initiative. Their common full-time entry level opportunities include Analyst positions, Associate Examiner positions, IT Developer positions, and Audit positions. These positions are recruited for all year long. The Gold Internship Program recruits 25-30 interns a year to the west-coast branches in a variety of positions. Recruiting begins in late October for the summer internship opportunities and all internships are paid!!!

Ok, I'll finally give you the answers but before I do, I think you should seriously consider the opportunities at the Federal Reserve Bank!

Sonos

Three words come to mind when I think of Sonos: Cutting edge, creative, and dedicated. Sonos employs the most cutting edge technology in their wireless hi fi speaker systems. They personally create, build, and test all of their equipment and constantly strive to meet the needs of the consumer. The employees are held to a high standard and they are extremely dedicated to their work. Having said that, there is also a lot of fun to be had at Sonos. The culture is laid back, nearly everyone is in jeans and creativity is honored and expected. With lots of fun has to come lots of long hours and hard work to create such an amazing product.

Sonos is growing exponentially and they are hiring for not only computer science and engineering majors, but also for student interested in sales, customer service, human resources, social media, marketing and much more. Check them out; I think you'll like what you see!

Oh yeah, they have internship opps too!

Announcing the Awardee for Career Services Internship Scholarship Program!

After reviewing a competitive applicant pool, we are excited to announce that Jessica Morales has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Micael Kemp Internship Scholarship Award through Career Services Internship Scholarship Program! Jessica Morales is a second year student in Biological Sciences and plans to attend medical school. Jessica is currently exploring her interests further to identify her area of focus within the field and has been selected to participate in COPE Health Solution’s Clinical Care Extender Internship. Jessica is extremely excited for the experience with direct patient care and all that the rotation program has to offer.

Career Services recognizes the need for students to explore their interests through internships to become competitive graduate school and job applicants. Many internships that our students seek are unpaid, such as the Clinical Care Extender Internship, and may cause financial hardships. The goal of Career Services Internship Scholarship Program is to reduce financial barriers that may impact students pursuing unpaid internships as they seek experiential learning in their field of interest. Preference for this scholarship was given to students who demonstrate financial need and applicants were considered for the Micael Kemp Internship Scholarship Award, which honors the student’s achievement with a $1,500 scholarship to support their internship experience.

In light of significant financial barriers, Jessica Morales is persistent in identifying financial aid and support options that will ultimately assist in her success.  Jessica currently works on campus and has held several part-time jobs to contribute to her academic and career goals. Additionally, Jessica is challenged by the difficult cost to commute to her internship from Santa Barbara to the Los Angeles area while juggling summer courses and her on-campus job. Not only has Jessica made her passion for the medical field evident, she has also demonstrated her dedication to pursuing experiential learning opportunities to support her career goals:

“Many times I have considered taking at least a leave of absence from my internship in order to save up some money to not have financial struggles in the future. However, I know postponing my problems won’t solve them, if anything this might worsen them. I am eager to contribute my abilities and experiences to the medical field but I am always hindered from doing more due to my lack of money. If given this scholarship I can guarantee you won’t be sorry. Given my broad experience and background, I believe I can put my abilities to good use as I am trying to do now with this internship as well as in the future.” –Jessica Morales

Please join us in congratulating Jessica Morales!

Intern with Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara—Apply Now!

The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCA) is a non-profit, non-collecting art museum located downtown at Paseo Nuevo. The museum selects interns to act as the link between exhibit artists, the museum, and visitors. These internships are a great opportunity to gain competitive experience involving art, museums, education, and customer service. I had the opportunity to visit MCA today to learn more about the Education Internship program.

Interns are able to gain an insider perspective of the internal functions at a contemporary museum while working closely with prominent artists from around the world. Selected applicants will act as gallery attendants and educate visitors regarding the artists’ style and vision. Interns at MCA are under the Education Department which offers education events for the community, from children to adults. Interns will get training and hands-on experience with museum visitors and facilitate activities in the interactive Art Lab (pictured below). Proactive interns may get further involved in the museum depending on their interests.

Interested in this opportunity? Apply for the Education Intern positions with Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara through GauchoLink (job # 744382). Be sure to demonstrate any applicable customer service experience, communication skills, and passion about art or education in the application and interview.

MCA is seeking a number of interns to begin at the beginning of May and they prefer interns to stay through two exhibition cycles, which would be approximately eight months. This commitment allows interns to work with various artists, exhibits, and education activities to further their experience with MCA.

Take a peek inside the current exhibits at MCA. I was able to explore the museum before they opened to the public—VIP access!
