Recruiter Tips to Prep for the Career Fair!

Seventeen employers and recruiters attended Résumé+ at Career Services on Tuesday, January 15th to give students valuable résumé feedback. This event occurs quarterly the week before each career fair and it’s the perfect opportunity to make sure résumés are ready for the big recruiting event! We sat down with the employers before they began critiquing résumés so we could gather professional advice from industry leaders.

What catches your eye at a recruiting event?

“An engaging smile and approachable disposition. Students need to express that they are able and willing to work, and provide a résumé that is tailored. Communication skills are very important!” –Tyco representative

“Too many students approach recruiters and ask, ‘So, what does your company do?’ The applicant should show their knowledge and interest in the company by doing research.” –Kollmorgen representative

“It stands out when a student has an elevator pitch or strong introduction about what they are looking for so an employer can tailor their response. About one-third of students are well prepared at recruiting events.” –Enterprise Holdings representative

“Applicants approaching recruiters at an event need to be personable and able to talk about their internship experience and why it is relevant.” –Yardi representative

Do you have expectations about professional attire at a Career Fair?

“Wearing a suit or professional attire indicates you are willing to assume the part and make the commitment. Professional attire and appearance also makes an applicant look more approachable.” –Chase Bank representative

“Although the field of engineering is a little bit different in the office we still look for professional attire at recruiting events such as a jacket and button-up shirt.” –Raytheon representative

“Dress professionally and appropriate to impress recruiters. Remember, you’re not going out to a club.” Kollmorgen representative

“It’s important to dress professionally but equally important to make sure you feel comfortable being yourself and expressing fit for the position.” College Works Painting representative

What are some “deal breakers” when reviewing a résumé?

“Funky fonts, irrelevant graphics, and being unorganized.” –Yardi representative

“An ambiguous objective statement.” –Kollmorgen representative

Thanks to our local recruiters for sharing such great advice! These tips will help students prepare for the career fair this upcoming Tuesday. Get ready for the Winter 2013 Career Fair and check out the list of participating companies who will be here on Tuesday, January 22nd 1-4pm at Corwin Pavilion!

Kollmorgen

I had the pleasure of visiting Kollmorgen right before the holiday break and got to see some Gaucho Alumni in practice. Kollmorgen is a local company that produces high performance motion control products. They are located in Goleta, biking distance from campus, and hire interns and graduating seniors from UCSB. Interns who excel at Kollmorgen are often offered full-time positions. You can see two Gauchos in the pictures below who accomplished just this.  Ryan, on the left if a Software Engineer. He graduated in June 2011. Dan is a Hardware Engineer that graduated in June of 2012.

What’s really exciting is that Kollmorgen has locations worldwide and once you’re in you have these opportunities at your fingertips! To find out some more information about Kollmorgen visit their table at the Winter Career Fair on Tuesday, January 22nd at the Corwin Pavilion from 1-4pm or come get you resume critiqued at our Resume+ event on Tuesday, January 15th at Career Services. Human Resource Manager, Kay Hoffman will be helping us critique resumes from 2-4pm.

International Cooperative Education, U.S. Department of State & Peace Corps

"Movember" is marked by the attempt by many to grow an awesome moustache. However, I am declaring this November (drum roll) "Globvember". Why? The theme has been GLOBAL. Global internships, that is. Everywhere I turn someone is inquiring about the best way to land an internship abroad and Career Services has been bringing you multiple information sessions, while I’ve been meeting with organizations and attending the Lessons from Abroad conference down in L.A. to learn even more about internship options. What have I found? There are a lot of cool ways to go abroad for that internship experience you are craving…if you are willing to explore, work for it, and perhaps accept a reality check at some turns! In addition to the great internship opportunities available to UCSB EAP students, there are many other internship paths to explore and alternative post-BA programs. We brought The U.S. Department of State, Peace Corps, and International Cooperative Education to campus this last month to share some of these great options.

A wardrobe change. The tango. Photos of internships at Rolls-Royce, banks, schools, and more. Talk about a colorful and vibrant information session!! I would expect nothing less from a UCSB alumnus who is dedicated to helping students find the right internship fit by meeting individually with students after the information session for short “pre” interviews to assess interests, language skills, and just to get to know his fellow Gauchos. If you missed this session, don’t worry! Dr. Günter Seefeldt meets with interested applicants via Skype while he is abroad, just check out International Cooperative Education, explore the wealth of opportunities and the application, and contact him for more details.

We were lucky enough to have a Diplomat in Residence visit UCSB to share his incredible career adventures abroad and let students know about the Student Experience Program, which offers U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in internships where you work closely with representatives of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign and Civil Services. There are opportunities internationally and nationally at OVER 265 locations where students gain hands-on experience and insight into the daily operations of U.S. foreign policy!

You have probably seen our campus representative around as she visits several times a month for information sessions and tabling to share the multitude of international opportunities Peace Corps has to offer volunteers (and if you were one of the students to attend the Lessons from Abroad conference in L.A. you may have spotted our rep there, too!). You can check out the Peace Corps website to learn more and get a current list of where volunteers can go. Remember, Peace Corps accepts applications year-round! Better yet, why not keep an eye on our Career Services website for the Winter calendar to see when Peace Corps will be back on campus!?! You will hear a first hand story from a past volunteer and get the scoop on the many perks for your hard work in Peace Corps—two of the coolest ones I learned about last week: 1.) the opportunity to consider secondary projects that fit your interests while you are abroad 2.) career fairs held twice a year exclusive for returning Peace Corps volunteers!

That’s it for now, Gauchos, but I will leave you with this sentiment from Dr. Günter Seefeldt, “You will stumble in every internship, job, and travel experience—but you must learn the tango of every country you visit.”

AppFolio

appfolio

I recently had the pleasure of visiting AppFolio, one of our Career Partners here at Career Services, and boy was I impressed by both their staff and office. If you’re not already aware of the growing company now’s the time to get informed.

AppFolio provides cost-effective, web-based rental property management software that allows residential property managers to more effectively market, manage and grow their business. They are located just a few miles from campus and have all kinds of full-time opportunities available. You will be pleasantly surprised by the diverse opportunities ranging from sales, payroll, and customer success to design and engineering. Here’s some more info: http://www.appfolio.com/jobs

Now, onto the good stuff! Their office is really cool and the environment is welcoming and friendly. If you don’t believe me, just check out the pictures and video below. Their employees can sit on large bouncy balls while at their desks and they get to wear jeans to work…..wahoo! They have a kitchen stocked with food and goodies so you literally don’t have to bring your lunch and they have a gym where you can work off all of those goodies. Probably the most impressive thing I saw was their “Wall of Happiness” where they post positive comments from their clients next to the picture of the person from the company who helped them!

Check out this video they just sent over to Career. It really gives you an insider look at AppFolio.

City Year

The new Regional Recruitment Manager from City Year, Bert Rivera, visited Career Services to tell us all about the opportunities at City Year. For those of you who are unfamiliar, City Year is an education focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people (corps members) of all backgrounds for a 10 month service to keep students in school and on track to graduation. As tutors, mentors and role models corps members help students and schools through academic support, attendance and positive behavior encouragement, and community and school improvements.

This is a great opportunity for students interested in teaching or who just want to give 10 months of service. City Year recruits students from any major or discipline and you don't need any teaching experience to apply. Bert will be on campus the following times this quarter to answer your questions and to let you know more about City Year:
  • Monday, October 8th from 4:00-5:30 for an Information Session (located at Career Services, Room 1109)
  • Tuesday, October 9th from 11:00- 2:00 tabling in front of the UCEN

UCSB Enterprise Interns Ranked #1

This summer I visited Enterprise, one of our Career Partners, for the Intern Presentations. At the end of the Summer Management Trainee Internships at Enterprise all of the interns are asked to present on a topic in groups of 4-6. This year, two of our Gauchos, Louis Evans and Rachel Brockett, along with several students from other universities presented on how Enterprise can better reach the Hispanic community and a group of judges awarded their group with the WINNING project. Each student received a $1000.00 scholarship!

I had a brief chance to congratulate Louis and Rachel after the event and get in a few photo ops. A.J. Perez, Talent Acquisition Specialist at Enterprise, was especially proud of her groups achievements.
