Young's Market Company is recruiting at UCSB!

We are pleased to introduce to you our newest Career Partner at UCSB, Young’s Market Company. Young’s Market Company is a leader in the wholesale and distribution of wine, spirits and selected beverages. Founded in 1888, it is one the oldest continuously operating companies in the United States. Today they are the fourth largest wine and spirits distributor in the U.S. and now they will be recruiting at UCSB!

Young’s Market offers many employment opportunities but the main position that they will be recruiting for will be that of Sales Rep Merchandiser. A Sales Rep Merchandiser will be responsible for maximizing the sale of supplier brands to retail chain customers. So what this basically means is that you will work with pre-established customers, retail chains, to ensure that the wine and spirits from Young’s Market Company are accurately displayed and marketed to customers that will shop at these stores. Young’s Market is looking for students from any major who possess strong communication and problem solving skills. Because you will be constantly communicating with store managers, communication skills are critical. The Sales Rep Merchandiser position is a full-time salary position with the opportunity to make many bonuses! This isn’t a typical 8am-5pm job where you sit behind a desk. At Young’s Market every day is different and exciting and you rarely will have to go into an office environment. So if you want to work with cool products, have a full-time job that won’t require you to work in an office environment, and possess excellent communication skills, then Young’s Market should be a company that you consider. And one last thing, Young’s Market promotes from within so there are immense job growth opportunities!

Insider Interview Tips

"Don't tell me what you would do; tell me what you DID!"

This was the response from a Target recruiter when a student asked about interview questions at a recent panel. Earlier this week, we invited several companies to speak about their internship opportunities at a panel during our yearly Internship Week at Career Services. After each company (Enterprise, Target, and Sherwin Williams) shared information about their awesome internships, students began to ask questions. One student in particular asked each recruiter to share interview questions and tips. They all agreed that they love to ask behavioral questions, those that start with, "tell me about a time when......." Here are some of their favorites:

-Tell me about a time that you dealt with an angry customer.
-Tell me about a time you made a mistake and what you learned.
-Tell me about a time that you worked on a team and what you contributed
-Tell me about a time where you took initiative.
-Tell me about a time where you exhibited leadership skills.

The key in answering these questions is to be very specific and to not generalize. Actually tell the recruiter a story. And remember to tell the recruiter what you did in each situation, not what you would do.

Recruiters all agreed that candidates need to do their homework and research the company and the position. Candidates need to be truly interested and enthusiastic for the position and to work at the company. Most importantly, students need to be able to answer these two questions:
-Why do you want this internship?
-How will you add value to our team and to our company?

Well, I hope these insider tips can help you prepare for your next interview. Swing by Career Services to pick up our Interview Guide and let us help you prepare for that interview!

Meet College Works

College Works Painting program gives students an opportunity to build a competitive resume and gain marketable leadership skills through learning how to operate a small painting business.

CWP helps university students develop, implement, and illustrate a strong work ethic, strong communication skills, effective organizational management skills, powerful sales skills, and an overall understanding of the mechanics of leadership that can be applied to any profession. The challenging job market has made it essential for college students to gain real world experience prior to graduation. CWP provides a universally useful answer to this need.

They are looking for extremely competitive and motivated students who want a challenge this summer unlike a typical summer job. The College Works internship is a paid internship. Last year's College Works interns at UCSB earned profits averaging $5,000 and as high as $20,000 their first year while gaining business experience and business contacts. College Works interns design and implement a marketing program, conduct sales, estimate projects, work with customers, and recruit, hire, and train their own employees. Essentially, they learn all aspects of running a small business.

College Works Alumni are an extremely successful group of individuals and many own or run large companies or have gone on to work for companies such as Google, Accenture, 3E, PWC, and Morgan Stanley. As an intern you will have an opportunity to meet and learn from many of these alumni. Also, successful completion of the program places you into a select referral program to help you with your job search after graduation.

CWP is in the final run of their recruiting for the 2014 summer. They will be on campus for these upcoming events:
--resume+ Jan 22nd, 2pm -4pm, Career Services Courtyard
--Find and Secure an Internship Workshop on Jan 21st, 2pm-3pm, Career Services Rm. 1109
--Winter Career Fair Jan 30th, 1pm-4pm, Corwin Pavilion
--Management & Leadership Internship Panel Feb 25th, 3:30pm-4:30pm, Career Services Rm. 1109
